If a small boutique hotel in the heart of a charming and historic small town with a great food scene sounds like your idea of a perfect getaway, then head to Downtown Mystic. I know we often think of Mystic as a great place to visit with kids because of the Historic Seaport and Aquarium, but there is more to Mystic to enjoy.

The Whaler’s Inn in Downtown Mystic is a boutique hotel, which is spread over five unique buildings with 45 guest rooms. The Morgan Suite in the 1865 House is perfect for a romantic getaway, featuring two rooms and a double-sided gas fireplace with views over Main Street in the sitting room. Have breakfast at Kitchen Little. Enjoy lunch and a local beer at the Engine Room. Then finish up with dinner at The Shipwright’s Daughter back at the hotel.

Griswold Inn, Essex

Of course, if history is your jam, you need to plan a getaway to the Griswold Inn in Essex. One of the oldest continuously-operated inns in the country, the Griswold Inn has been welcoming visitors since 1776. The Inn has been used as a backdrop for films and was most recently featured in the Hallmark Channel movie, Christmas at Pemberley Manor. Be sure to enjoy dinner and drinks at the Tap Room — often called one of the best bars in America.

Nearby, you can take a ride on the Essex Steam train, take a boat tour along the Connecticut River, or just spend time enjoying the thoroughly charming town of Essex.

The Spa at Norwich Inn has been our pick for a romantic getaway since our “babymoon” there when I was six months pregnant. The spa offers 27 treatment rooms, a sauna, salon, fitness center, indoor pool, and a relaxation room that I always fall asleep in.

You can stay in the historic inn, or at one of the larger condominium villas spread over the 42-acre property. When not relaxing at the spa, Mohegan Sun is only a few minutes away when you want a little more excitement.

Nearby you can take a walk through the White Memorial Conservation Center, hike in Mt. Tom State Park, check out the flower fields at White Flower Farm, go horseback riding at Lee’s Stables, or take a tour at the Litchfield Distillery.

There are also a number of wineries nearby, including Hopkins Vineyard, which overlooks the beautiful Lake Waramaug. If you go on the weekend, they often host live music performances and open up their grounds for picnicking.

Water Forest Treehouse Retreat, Norwich

Are you ready for an adventure? If your idea of romance is a unique experience and you don’t mind roughing it a bit, book a stay at the Water Forest Treehouse. Decorated like a fairy home, this cozy treehouse is a true retreat. This 168 sq ft. private heated and electrified tiny home with stained glass windows surrounds an oak tree nestled in 100 acres of forest.

On property, there are 2.5 miles of hiking trails with a brook, waterfall, marsh, and pond and nearby you can canoe, kayak, or swim. Just keep in mind that there is a compost toilet but no running water inside. Outdoors you will find a fire pit and outdoor living space, including a hammock. At the main house, you can enjoy a private outdoor shower in the summer, or guests staying two nights or longer can utilize the indoor shower in the winter.
