If a small boutique hotel in the heart of a charming and historic small town with a great food scene sounds like your idea of a perfect getaway, then head to Downtown Mystic. I know we often think of Mystic as a great place to visit with kids because of the Historic Seaport and Aquarium, but there is more to Mystic to enjoy.
The Whaler’s Inn in Downtown Mystic is a boutique hotel, which is spread over five unique buildings with 45 guest rooms. The Morgan Suite in the 1865 House is perfect for a romantic getaway, featuring two rooms and a double-sided gas fireplace with views over Main Street in the sitting room. Have breakfast at Kitchen Little. Enjoy lunch and a local beer at the Engine Room. Then finish up with dinner at The Shipwright’s Daughter back at the hotel.

Of course, if history is your jam, you need to plan a getaway to the Griswold Inn in Essex. One of the oldest continuously-operated inns in the country, the Griswold Inn has been welcoming visitors since 1776. The Inn has been used as a backdrop for films and was most recently featured in the Hallmark Channel movie, Christmas at Pemberley Manor. Be sure to enjoy dinner and drinks at the Tap Room — often called one of the best bars in America.
